Women's Caucus History
"A line of hope is the hope of a line. You extend the line that passes between bodies, even when you do not know what’s what, even if you do not know what you are passing....." (Sara Ahmed, “Happy Futures, Perhaps.” Queer Times, Queer Becomings, ed. E.L. McCallum and Mikko Tuhkanen. Buffalo, NY: SUNY P, 2008, p. 175.)
Since the 1970s, the American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies Women’s Caucus has had a vibrant history. The essays below were generously compiled by Alison Conway and distributed in print at our annual conferences to celebrate the 25th, 30th, and 45th anniversary of our caucus. We are sure that you will find these messages to the future fascinating and inspiring.
As Manushag Powell reminds us in her 2015 essay, "The Women’s Caucus is a bastion of generous spirit. It is a salutary experience. While being mentored to learn, one can also be of use and serve others..."
Below you will find two documents that share some of the Women's Caucus members' thoughts and calls to action: 1) our 2005 report and 2) the 2015 report. Both can be downloaded as PDF files.
